Exercise,
which is defined as planned, structured, and repetitive bodily movement
done to improve physical fitness, has been shown to help maintain
function, health and overall quality of life for older adults. Specific
benefits for older adults focus mainly on decreasing cardiovascular
disease, disability, osteoporosis, and psychological problems and
providing feelings of optimal health and well-being.
These benefits
have been reported for older adults living in the community, continuing
care retirement communities (CCRC), assisted living facilities, and
skilled nursing facilities. Yet despite the known benefits of exercise,
the majority of older adults in these settings are not exercising
regularly.
