Fall Proof

by Debra J. Rose

The book Fall Proof! A Comprehensive Balance and Mobility Training Program, by Debra J. Rose, Human Kinetics (312 pages) $49. http://www.humankinetics.com. It is a great resource for practical ideas.

Balance and mobility disorders resulting in falls among the elderly population pose a serious public health problem in the United States. Costs associated with falls among the elderly are estimated to range from $75 billion to $100 billion. Coupling this statistic with the fact that adults over the age of 65 represent the fastest-growing population in the United States suggests an immediate need for activity programs specifically designed to reduce physical frailty and the rising incidence of falls among the older adult population. Fall-Proof! is the first comprehensive and structured balance and mobility training program to address these needs.

Traditionally, exercise programs designed to address physical frailty and falls have adopted one-dimensional approaches of aerobic exercise, resistance training, or flexibility training. However, research has shown that falls occur as a result of multiple risk factors, both internal and external, and the interplay of multiple body systems. FallProof! presents a multidimensional approach that systematically manipulates the individual's internal capabilities, the goals of the task being performed, and the environment in which the task is performed. This approach has been field tested with considerable success by fitness instructors and rehabilitative specialists working in a range of instructional settings.

Senior Fitness Test Manual and Kit

by Roberta Rikli and C. Jessie Jones

Up until now, most physical fitness tests have been geared to younger audiences. The Senior Fitness Test is an answer to the need for a simple, easy-to-use battery of test items that assess the functional fitness of older adults. The test is safe and enjoyable for older adults, it meets scientific standards for reliability and validity, and it has accompanying performance norms based on actual performance scores of over 7,000 men and women between the ages of 60 and 94.

The Senior Fitness Test Manual provides the theoretical basis for the test. It includes the developmental procedures and provides complete information on administering and scoring the test and providing feedback to test participants about their results. It also includes instructions on organizing and testing groups of older adults. The appendix has reproducible sample forms, charts, tables, and posters for instructors to use in their programs.

You can order the Senior Fitness Test Manual (Rikli and Jones- 2001, Human Kinetics) for about $39. http://www.humankinetics.com. This book includes information on warm-up exercises, safety precautions, and adaptations for certain health conditions like arthritis. There are test forms, suggestions for working with and motivating the senior population, and exercises and guidelines to help improve deficient areas.

The test kit costs about $79 and includes the Senior Fitness Test Manual, a CD, and a video demonstrating the testing protocols. The CD provides a means to record and track data for individuals and/or groups and will print out scores for all of the data you supply. It presents these scores in an easy-to-read bar chart but also provides a written interpretation of the score and an indication of a client’s risk based on criterion scores. This is a professional-looking report that you can actually hand to your clients. If you are choosing to work with the senior population, definitely consider this product.
